Classroom General Information

Introduction
It is my pleasure to welcome you and your child to the sixth grade. It is my hope that this will be a happy and successful school year for your child. My goal is to encourage your student to become a lifelong learner.

General Procedures
Students are expected to use a notebook to keep themselves organized. Homework will be posted on the board daily and students are expected to record all assignments in their planner.
Homework will also be posted on the South Whittier School District Website. www.swhittier.k12.ca.us/ Under "School" choose Monte Vista, Parents, Classes/Homework. Click on Grade 6, Mrs. Allen

Supplies
Be sure your student has a binder with dividers, lined paper, graph paper, pencils, a black ink pen, a red ink pen, and colored pencils or crayons.

Sixth Grade Curriculum
The sixth grade curriculum is challenging. Students will be tested in Language arts, and mathematics this school year.

Curriculum Expectations
Reading assignments will be given by your student’s reading teacher. Extra-curricular reading is encouraged, and students will be going to the school library weekly. All writing assignments are to be in cursive handwriting and neatness will be emphasized. Math problems are to be written out and solved showing all work. Written answers from any text are to be completed, showing comprehensive knowledge of the subject through thoughtful complete answers.

Behavioral Expectations
Each student is to respect themselves, their teacher and other students. This can easily be done by following directions, and by being a good listener and classroom participant. Students will be working both independently and cooperatively in the classroom.

Homework
Homework will be assigned Monday – Friday. A student’s chronic failure to do homework will result in loss of awards and privileges as well as parent notification and detention. Homework assignments may be modified to meet an individual student’s need.
